The School of Nursing offers a post graduate capstone certificate in psychiatric mental health nursing. The goal of the certificate is to prepare advanced practice nurses who are eligible to sit for national certification in psychiatric mental health practice. The option recognizes the role that advanced practice nurses play in helping to address the serious need for psychiatric mental health services. The emphasis of the program is on meeting the psychiatric mental health needs of individuals from rural and underserved populations.

Coursework is delivered primarily in an online format with periodic face-to-face sessions. Clinical experiences may be arranged close to a student’s home community and will include periodic face-to-face seminar sessions.

Completion of the certificate program prepares students to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Family Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification examination. The family psych NP exam will be the only psychiatric mental health advanced practice exam that is offered starting in 2014.
