About Us

Strategic Plan Overview: 2003–2006

Mission:

To improve human health through nursing leadership in research, education, and professional and public service.

Vision/Defining Characteristics:

  • Robust programs of research addressing critical health problems.
  • Innovative models of nursing education responsive to societal needs and built on partnerships and technological advances.
  • Leadership at local, regional, national, and international levels to solve critical problems facing nursing and health care.
  • A vibrant and diverse working and learning environment.

I. Promote research and scholarship to improve human health.

  • Promote research foci in the areas of patient-centered nursing interventions, systems and health policy with special emphasis on vulnerable populations, and nursing education.
  • Strengthen research climate and infrastructure.
  • Define and implement clear expectations for faculty and instructional academic staff in regard to research and scholarship (e.g., scholarship of teaching, application, and integration).

II. Advance innovative educational programs.

  • Maximize teaching effectiveness at individual and programmatic levels. Offer innovative academic programs that address unmet needs and emerging trends in nursing and health care.
  • Undertake comprehensive review of degree programs in light of strategic directions and available resources.
  • Improve structures and systems for coordinating and overseeing academic programs.

III. Engage with the wider community through leadership in nursing practice and professional and public service.

  • Focus school-wide professional and public service initiatives consistent with research, academic, and practice directions.
  • Extend the school’s public profile through communication strategies highlighting faculty, staff, student, and alumni achievements.

IV. Enhance the school’s diversity of people and perspectives, and its effectiveness as an organization.

  • Increase diversity of faculty, staff, and students, focusing on groups underrepresented in the profession.
  • Improve the quality of the work and learning environment for all.
  • Implement targeted strategies to increase organizational effectiveness and to maintain academic quality.
  • Foster a climate of discovery and diverse perspectives on issues in nursing and health care.
