Admissions Criteria for MS
MPH
The purpose of the MS/MPH Dual Degree is to prepare nurses for
professional roles as educators, administrators, and advanced practice
nurses seeking to link clinical and/or nursing education goals with
public health practice. The curriculum combines core in nursing
and public health practice together with student-selected electives
for specialization. Two degrees are awarded – the Master of
Science in nursing from the Graduate School and the Master of Public
Health from the Medical School.
Program Planning
and Degree Requirements
Students applying to the MS/MPH program submit applications to
both the School of Nursing and the Medical School (Department of
Population Health) and are formally admitted by both programs. Students
are assigned an advisor in both programs. Programs of study are
individually arranged to address the interests of students, meet
the requirements of both degrees and emphasize interdisciplinary
collaboration.
The MS/MPH program requires a minimum of 66 credits, including
a maximum of 12 credits overlapping between programs. A maximum
of 9 credits may be transferred from other institutions. The program
can be completed in as little of 6 semesters of full-time study.
The program may be completed on a part-time basis. The structure
of the two degrees is presented in the following table. Some role
specializations (e.g. nurse practitioner) may require additional
credits to fulfill certification requirements.
