Application Process

The faculty of the School of Nursing and the Associate Dean for Academic Programs review applications and then make a recommendation regarding admission to the Graduate School.  Materials required by the School of Nursing (sent to the following address):

  • Apply and pay the $45.00 application fee the using electronic application at: http://info.gradsch.wisc.edu/admin/admissions/appinstr.html.
  • One complete set of official transcripts. This should be from all institutions attended, including Madison campus (when applicable).
  • Reasons for post-master's preparation. In your statement, please indicate the post-master’s option you are applying for, your reasons for selecting this option, discuss how your work experiences have contributed to your knowledge and interest in the area and address your goals for the future
  • Curriculum vitae or resume.
  • Letters of recommendation are completed electronically. In your online application for admission, provide contact information for three references. These references may be faculty members and/or your most recent employers familiar with your qualifications, potential, and capacity for graduate study. You will want to contact your references ahead of time, so that they can expect your request for a recommendation. A recommendation request will be sent, by email, to each of your references. The email will include your name and a link to the electronic recommendation form. After you have submitted your application, you will be able to track the Graduate School’s receipt of the recommendations through the online status system.
  • Photocopy of nursing license. Applicants should submit a copy of their current state nursing license

Re-entry Students

If you were enrolled as graduate student at UW-Madison within the last 5 years, you should follow re-entry procedures, http://www.grad.wisc.edu/admin/admissions/reentry.html. The School of Nursing still asks you to submit a copy of your curriculum vitae/resume, a statement of your reasons for seeking post-master's preparation, 3 letters of reference and a copy of your nursing license.

Application Deadline

Deadline dates areMarch 1 for Fall admissions and October 1 for Spring admission.  Applications must be complete (recommendations, transcripts, reasons for graduate study, and test scores received) by six weeks after the application deadline date in order to be reviewed and processed for the selected semester.  Admission decisions are generally reached 7-8 weeks following the stated deadline dates.  Early admission decisions under special circumstances, for example military personnel under deadlines, may be requested.
