Purpose: The purpose of this module is to provide foundational knowledge about breast cancer in preparation for the study of breast cancer screening modalities as well as the follow up of abnormal screening results.

Audience: Primary care providers who perform breast cancer screenings.

Objectives: Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify the incidence and prevalence of breast cancer among all women, as well as among special populations.
  2. Discuss the myths and current evidence regarding genetic, environmental, and other risk factors for breast cancer.
  3. Describe the pathophysiology of breast cancer and the progression of abnormal cell growth.
  4. Consider implications for patient counseling.
