Description of Research Focus:

I study factors that influence a person’s decision to engage in self-regulating behaviors for health promotion or self-care associated with chronic disease management (e.g., hypertension, diabetes). Using the theoretical framework of the self-regulation model of illness, I have conducted both experimental and descriptive studies in how a person’s beliefs about symptoms and illness influence health-related actions. My more recent work focuses on health disparities of race/ethnicity and income in relationship to healthy lifestyle changes in diet and physical activity. I have also expanded my research on diabetes self-care to developing countries, specifically Vietnam and Uganda.
