Nursing

Description of Research Focus:

In contemporary health care, patients must assume more responsibility than ever for managing their health practices and health-related data. Nurses must build and evaluate information technologies likely to ensure the full participation of patients in their own care. My research in the area of nursing informatics examines how we can use the Internet, home-based computer systems, and specialized information resources to promote self-care and disease management skills among patients and their family caregivers. My lab links the School of Nursing with the College of Engineering. We have excellent computer resources (MAC, Windows/NT, Unix) for use by students in designing and developing sophisticated computer-based tools for consumer health. Our network of home care researchers provides students with access to statewide networks for field investigations.
