Description of Research Focus:
My research program aims to prevent children’s participation in health risk behavior by providing developmentally appropriate, family focused, theory-based interventions to families in the community, particularly during times of transition. I study interventions to promote open communication and family satisfaction, the topics that stimulate conflict, and strategies for conflict management among families with young or pre-adolescents. Developmental theory, attachment theory, and the Circumplex Model underpin the research. I use quantitative approaches with emphasis on descriptive and intervention methods. My research group is examining parent-child communication processes and interventions to reduce children’s involvement in health risk behaviors. I am also involved in the National Children's Study. Waukesha County is a Vanguard County in the 21 year long study of environmental effects on child development and a collaborative endeavor between the UW Waisman Center and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
