Since many of the NET courses are offered online, NET students will need a computer. Up-to-date information on computer requirements and links to resources for buying a new computer can be found at: http://support.doit.wisc.edu/showroom/page.php?id=3061

Recommendations for a PC
How to check:  If you have a “My Computer” icon on the desktop, right-click on it and choose “Properties” (The “System” heading tells you which version of Windows you have installed. The “Computer” heading tells you the type of Processor that you have installed and the amount of RAM memory you have ). Click “Cancel” to close this window, then double-click the “My Computer” icon and right-click on the icon for your C: drive and from the menu select Properties (this will tell you the hard drive size).

If you have Windows XP, you will not have a “My Computer” icon, you need to click on “Start” then “Control Panel.” Double-click on the “Performance and Maintenance” icon, double-click on the “System” icon (the “System” heading tells you which version of Windows you have installed, the “Computer” heading tells you the type of Processor that you have installed and the amount of RAM memory you have). Click the “Cancel” button to close this window. Click on “Start,” then “Programs” and “Accessories” and open Windows Explorer. Right-click on the icon for your C: drive and from the menu select “Properties” (this will tell you the hard drive size).

  • Processor - Pentium III or better
  • Memory - 512 MB
  • Operating System - Windows 2000 SP4 or XP SP1 (Home or Professional edition).
  • Hard Drive - 40 GB
  • CD ROM drive

Recommendations for a Mac
How to check: Choose “About This Mac” from the Apple menu (left-most menu along the top) to find the Operating system version, Processor, and memory.   Close this box.   Click on the Macintosh HD icon on the desktop, then choose “Get Info” from the “File” menu, this will tell you the hard drive size.

  • Processor - 700 MHz with built-in USB or better
  • Memory - 512 MB
  • Operating System - MacOS X v.10.3.3
  • Hard Drive - 40 GB
  • CD ROM drive

Word Processor

  • PC: productivity suites - MS Office 2000 or newer, Star Office 7 or newer, or comparable software for word processing, spreadsheets and presentations (Note: student discounts are available for these products at: http://wiscsoftware.wisc.edu/wisc)
  • Mac: productivity suites - MS Office v.X, AppleWorks or comparable software for word processing, spreadsheets and presentations (Note: student discounts are available for these products at: http://wiscsoftware.wisc.edu/wisc)

Note: many faculty have MS Office so you will need to be able to save documents in a compatible format.

Web Browsers
How to check: open the browser software, under the “Help” menu, the last item will be About (name of software), choose this menu item.

  • PC: Internet Explorer 6 SP1, Netscape 7 or Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.3
  • Mac: Safari 1.2, Netscape 7 or Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.3

Email (optional)

  • PC: Outlook Express 6, Outlook 2000/XP/2003, Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 or Netscape 7
  • Mac: OS X Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 or Netscape 7

Network connectivity

  • 56K modem, ethernet.   High speed internet is HIGHLY recommended.

Virus software

  • Virus software is essential for PC users.   Norton AntiVirus can be picked up for free in the Tech Store, or downloaded for free via high-speed Internet connection at home, office or computer lab (http://techstore.doit.wisc.edu/nav/nav_login.asp). Norton AntiVirus is also included on CD with WiscWorld Software Suite for $15 in the Tech Store.

Sound

  • Sound capabilities often come with the computer

Printer

  • A printer is not required but it may be useful to print articles or papers
