Eligibility Criteria

Returning RN student in the RN-to-MS track (preferred) or RN-to-BSN track
Professional interest/practice in: Nursing Education, Women’s Health, or Geriatrics
Eligible for membership in Sigma Theta Tau
Evidence of professional leadership activities

Personal statement of how candidate conceptualizes the professional role of nursing in her/his chosen focus area, and how the academic degree will facilitate the attainment of personal professional leadership goals. (Limit of 500 words)

Winner will be notified by November 7th and presented with the $500 Scholarship at the Sigma Theta Tau/Beta Eta Chapter Induction on Sunday, November 9th. 2008.

2008 Graduate Research Award

The 2008 Research Award was given to Feng Lin, a doctoral student at UW, for "A Feasibility Study of Patient Perceptions of Mild Cognitive Impairment". Her faculty sponsor is Professor Susan Heidrich. Feng Lin obtained her BSN from Jilin University in China, and entered the doctoral program at UW-Madison School of Nursing in 2006 with a focus on gerontological nursing. Her study is a descriptive pilot study of persons diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a transitional stage prior to the development of true dementia, to assess their illness perceptions and emotional responses to the diagnosis. She is using interviews and exploring the feasibilitiy of using structured self-report scales to measure emotional responses and perceptions. The data are projected be used to develop interventions to assist persons in coping with the diagnosis of MCI.
