N747 Practicum in a Selected Functional
Area
Computer Authorization for Registration
WHAT IS A FUNCTIONAL ROLE PRACTICUM?
The focus of N747, Practicum in a Selected Functional Area, is
on role development as contrasted to N719, Independent Field Study
in Clinical Nursing, in which the focus is on advancement of clinical
knowledge
Catalog Description
Guided practicum in teaching, consultation or clinical specialist
roles; students assigned to a teaching department, a nursing unit,
or a cooperating community health agency according to interest.
Prerequisites are graduate standing and
consent of instructor.
Course Objectives
- To provide guided experience in teaching, clinical specialist,
or consultation roles.
- Students identify specific objectives in consultation with the
faculty and role preceptor.
Placement in Program
In general, students do not plan a N747 until they have completed
part of their graduate program. Students may choose to repeat the
course depending upon their needs and goals.
Supervision
Students enroll in this course under the direction of a faculty
member in the School of Nursing. Students have the opportunity to
work with advanced practice nurse preceptors in service and educational
settings when appropriate to the student's goals and approved by
the School of Nursing faculty.
Credits
Students may register for 1 to 8 credits of N747. The time required
per week will depend upon the number of credits, which in turn depends
upon the scope and extent of objectives. In general, 4 hours per
week per credit (60 hours) would be expected.
Grading
Evaluation will be based on objectives established by the student,
the preceptor and the faculty supervisor. Grades will be submitted
as S for satisfactory or U for unsatisfactory (S/U).
HOW DO I NEGOTIATE A ROLE PRACTICUM?
In the semester preceding the practicum,
the student should have explored the feasibility, set-up and their
proposed objectives in order to be "ready to start" the
practicum at the beginning of the enrolled semester, not
several weeks into the term.
Preparation by the student should include:
- Discussion with their advisor (or another faculty member) to
work through the initial determination of the goals to be achieved
and how the practicum will fit into their total program;
- Discussion with the preceptor under whose supervision the student
plans to work. This should include the feasibility of the practicum
and ways and means to meet the student's objectives and needs
(e.g. time commitment, documentation requirements, on-going conferences
between student and preceptor, and periodic contact with the faculty
supervisor.
- Preparation of specific measurable objectives. Additions or
revisions of the objectives may be appropriate once the actual
practicum has begun.
HOW DO I GET REGISTERED?
- After the student, preceptor and faculty supervisor agree to
the purpose and scope of the role practicum, the student completes
the Computer Authorization Form for Clinical
and Independent Study Courses (http://www.son.wisc.edu/students/forms/GradAuthFormRev6-20-06.pdf)
to initiate setting the webenrollment controls.
- The completed form is submitted to Academic Programs Front Desk, K6/146. As soon as the section has been set-up an email will be sent to the student with the class number they will need to enroll.
- The student enrolls for N747 using MY
UW (http://my.wisc.edu/portal/)
completing their enrollment.
HOW DO I COMPLETE THE CLINICAL?
At the very beginning of the semester, the student, preceptor and
faculty supervisor should meet together to discuss the student's
objectives (now in specific form) and the plans for accomplishing
them. If the preceptor's specific requirements vary, it should be
made clear to the student. The preceptor then assumes responsibility
for the on-going guidance and evaluation of the student, in consultation
with the student's faculty supervisor.
Although learning activities will vary according to the student's
objectives and the preceptor's requirements, activities in addition
to the role experiences may include reference
reading, informal and formal conferences and seminars, in-service
meetings, and the like.
The faculty supervisor meets as necessary with the preceptor and
student at the end of the semester to evaluate the practicum.
WHAT DOCUMENTARION IS NEEDED?
By the last day of class for the semester,
a summary of the practicum experience
should be completed by the student and signed
by the student, the preceptor and the faculty supervisor. Then it
should be turned in to the Services Office, K6/146, to be filed
in the student's permanent record. It is optional for the preceptor
to make a written evaluation of student's performance in the role
practicum for the student's permanent file.
