Registration Information for Graduate Students

SPRING SEMESTER 2008

Enrollment

Web enrollment for classes for the upcoming Spring semester 2008 will begin Monday, November 12th.  Check online at http://registrar.wisc.edu/. Remember Fall and Spring Timetables are no longer available in a printed format.

The following information is designed to answer questions you may have about enrollment.  Students are encouraged to see their advisors early to plan their program of study and also to enroll early paying particular attention to enrolling for the correct sections and the number of credits when courses are offered for variable credits.  The Graduate School has become very selective in the approval of late registration and course change requests.

Using your NetID and password,  login to the MY UW portal (http://my.wisc.edu/portal/index.jsp). Click into the Student Center to begin enrollment.  You can set up a “Wish List” prior to registration.

Changes in classes, times and room assignments can occur anytime before classes begin.  Be sure to recheck the Timetable at the beginning of each semester for the most up-to-date information.

Course Offerings - Spring 2008

Master’s Program

Students are encouraged to use the UPDATED 3-year plan of course offerings for long range program planning. It is located on the web at http://www.son.wisc.edu/students/3YRPLAN.pdf

In choosing your courses for spring, it may be helpful to know what is planned for Summer 2008.  The plan is to offer N590 (Nursing Informatics for Nursing Practice), N605, N701, N704, and N870.  Of these courses N590, N701, N704 and N870 will be offered online.

Clinical, Independent Studies and Research Courses

If you plan to take a clinical, an independent study or research course (N719, N747, N798, N799, N990, or N999), the following information will help you complete the registration process.

1. The registration controls for most of these courses are set at authorization only. The first step is to complete the computer authorization form located on the web at http://www.son.wisc.edu/students/forms/GradISAuthFormRev6-20-06.pdf.

2. Once you fill out the form and get appropriate signatures, return it to the Academic Programs front desk, K6/146.

3. We will create the section, check compliance (in health and HIPAA), authorize you for the course and email you the class number to use for enrollment.

In our experiences, arranging clinicals usually takes longer than you think they will, so plan early!  In addition, the School of Nursing must notify all participating clinical agencies before the start of the semester.  Arrangements for a clinical experience must be finalized at least 2 weeks prior (Friday January 4, 2008) to the start of the semester

N613, N614, N615, and N719:

1. Each nurse practitioner specialty area will submit a list of eligible students for N613-N615 sections. Students should enroll in their correct section: acute 010, adult 020 or 021 or 022, geriatric 030, pediatric 040 or 041, women's health 050, psychiatric 060.

2. Students will be notified of their assigned clinical sites at a later date in the semester.

3. Students should proceed to enroll in all other needed coursework while awaiting their clinical assignment.

4. Written documentation showing compliance with the tuberculosis requirement, the completed Hepatitis B titre and current Wisconsin licensure must be on file prior to authorization to enroll. Contact Donna Haack at dmhaack@wisc.edu if you have any questions on this procedure.

N798: Students interested in completing N798 Master's Research Practicum this semester, should begin their search by reviewing the overview document titled, "The N798 Research Practicum Experience."  Also review the "Faculty Sketches” http://www.son.wisc.edu/directories/faculty/Faculty_Sketches.pdf for detailed information on each faculty’s research.

  • The first step is to complete the computer authorization form, http://www.son.wisc.edu/students/forms/GradAuthFormRev6-20-06.pdf.
  • To be eligible to be authorized, students must have completed the campus HIPAA Research Training Module that provides information on privacy and the conduct of research important for student research experiences. Instructions for completing the module can be found at http://www.son.wisc.edu/students/HIPAA/HIPAAResearch.pdf
  • Students are reminded to submit to Marcia Voss their "N798 Contract" when an agreement of the expected outcomes and activities has been reached between the practicum advisor and the student.
