UW-Madison School of Nursing
Guidelines for Granting of Credits Towards the
Master of Science Degree in Nursing
General Guidelines
| Guidelines for Specialized Questions | Processing
the Request
Coursework taken at an another accredited institution of higher
learning is eligible for consideration to fulfill the degree or
specialty area requirements for the Master of Science program at
the UW-Madison School of Nursing. Credits may be "granted"
with the recommendation of the student's advisor, an evaluation
of an official transcript and the approval of the Associate Dean.
Students must complete a minimum residency of 27credits in the Master's
program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing.
General Guidelines for Granting
Credit
- Courses must meet program guidelines for content in our program.
- Only courses graded B or better will be considered.
- Graduate work should be less than 5 years old; special justification
is needed for work taken between five and ten years; work more
than ten years old will not be considered.
- Independent studies, clinical practicums and internships,
etc. are generally not acceptable for consideration (except
for certified practitioners).
- UW-Madison courses taken outside the School of Nursing must
meet the Graduate School minimum 300 level requirement.
- Nursing courses must be at a graduate level to meet program
requirements; UW-Madison nursing courses should be at or above
the 500 level.
- Nursing credits must be taken from an NLN or CCNE accredited
school.
- Coursework used to establish admissibility for the Graduate
School may be used to fulfill department course requirements
but may not be used for UW-Madison residency credits.
- "Granted" credits are not used to calculate the
student's overall grade point average.
- "Granted" credits do not appear on a student's UW-Madison
transcript.
Guidelines for Specialized
Questions
These credits must be counted as part of the total number allowed
to be granted into a student's program.
Special Student
Credits taken as a University of Wisconsin-Madison special student
are limited to a maximum of 6.
Second Master's Degree
Students pursuing a second master's degree may use up to one-fourth
of the minimum credits required in their specialty program to be
"granted" into the new program. Also see the UW-Madison
Graduate School Student Handbook for special conditions governing
a second or joint master's degree1.
RN to BS to MS
Any graduate work completed in the accelerated RN to BS to MS track
to meet the requirements of the baccalaureate degree (up to 15 credits)
count as part of the student's residency credits. Students in this
track can have other coursework "granted" into their graduate
program upon the approval of the advisor and the Associate Dean
for Graduate Academic Affairs & Research.
NP Certificate Waivers
Upon review, students entering the master's program as certified
nurse practitioners may have clinical content credits (NP preceptorship
and clinical management courses) waived. See document "Waiver
of Clinical Credits for BSNs with Non-Master's Nurse Practitioner
Certification" for more detail.
Processing the Request
- The student must complete a request form for "granting
of credit." Forms are available in Graduate Program Office
[K6/140], Graduate Student Room [K6/164], or you
may download a PDF version of this form.
- Courses used to meet core program requirements should be indicated
on the form.
- An official transcript must accompany the request (or a copy
if it was submitted with admission materials).
- The advisor's signature of approval must be obtained.
- The completed form is then submitted to Graduate Program Office
for processing.
- The Associate Dean for Graduate Academic Affairs & Research
will review the request and make a final decision. The student
and advisor will be notified. A copy will be placed in the student's
permanent file.
- The Graduate Programs Committee must review exceptions to
these guidelines.
