Course Description
Clinical Nursing I (4 crs) is the first of four undergraduate clinical nursing courses. Students spend an average of 12 hours per week in independent study, classroom, acute care and community-based settings. Initially, many of the hours are spent in classroom and independent study, where students learn and practice nursing skills in a controlled and safe environment. The community component of this course allows students to practice basic communication, assessment and nursing skills in a non-acute environment. Eventually, students utilize these skills while providing nursing care in an acute care setting, under the supervision of a clinical teacher. Clinical sites offering maximum opportunity for the use of beginning cognitive, interpersonal and psychomotor nursing skills. Critical thinking, communication, and safety skills will be included with all classroom and clinical practice content.
Course Information
- By noon on Friday August 29th, you should have access to the N219 web site (Learn@UW). Follow directions to log-on using your email user name and password. The URL is: https://learnuw.wisc.edu
- After logging on, click Content and use the outline to access important course information including: the N219 course syllabus; your clinical schedule, and a description of your clinical site. Your clinical instructor will provide hard copies of the N219 course syllabus, the N219 Evaluation Form, and your section syllabus when you meet during the first week of class. Also, expect an email from your Western Campus faculty with current information (date/time/location/attire) concerning orientation and your first week class/clinical day schedule.
The Western Campus has three rotations. One rotation will consist of 6 weeks in the Skills Lab. Rotation two will be in the community gaining experience in long term care, day care, and other selected community service options. The final rotation is clinical in the acute care setting of Gundersen Lutheran Hospital.
To make the most out of your clinical experiences, I recommend engaging in the learning process through active participation; tackling assignments early whenever possible; preparing thoroughly for all clinical & course-related experiences; and seeking early clarification if/when you are uncertain of directions or assignments.
Clinical Questionnaire
You will start a Clinical Questionnaire in N219 and it should be updated periodically, especially with reflections of your N219 clinical and community experiences (last page of form). You can download the document from the N219 web site from Learn@UW. You must submit the entire updated form at the end of the semester. At the beginning of the N319 semester you will provide your new instructor with your N219 sections completed. Therefore try to keep the file up to date each week.
Again, welcome to N219. Please feel free to stop by our offices, or email with any comments or concerns that we can assist you with throughout the semester.
