(This link requires Adobe Acrobat to open. You can get Acrobat for free by going to www.adobe.com )

Greetings and welcome to N449 (Clinical IV)!  Students will rank their preferences for N449 clinical sites.  The ranking system ensures fairness and tries to place you in a clinical site that you prefer. There are a variety of acute care inpatient sites and ambulatory sites.   In order to view and print a copy of the N449 Clinical Site Schedule, please click once to download a copy of this document (in PDF format).

SPECIFICS OF N449:

N449 is a precepted clinical rotation.  Preceptor information will be given to you when available, hopefully prior to your semester break.  Students are required to complete 180 hours of clinical practicum, so it is wise to begin your clinical early in the semester. You will be expected to work any shift rotation, including weekends, based on the availability of your preceptor.

N449 will meet as a class on Wednesday, January 23, 2008, from 2:30 PM – 4 PM at the Health Sciences Center in Room 2019.  At this time, you will receive an orientation to the course.  Ongoing classes will meet on Wednesdays from 2:30 PM – 4 PM.  The dates will be identified in the syllabus.  The syllabus will be available on Learn@UW prior to the beginning of semester.  Please bring a printed copy of the syllabus to class.

RANKING PROCESS:

The following instructions describe the ranking process, to select your N449 Lab.

  • Use the N449 Clinical Site Schedule to view all of the instructors’ clinical sites and clinical schedules.

  • Access the Clinical Site Directory on the School of Nursing web site for a detailed description of the clinical sites.

  • The ranking process will take place on-line via Learn@UW. This means that the clinical ranking information and the priority ranking form that you need to complete will be available to you beginning Friday, November 2 through Thursday, November 8.

  • Once you have logged in to Learn@UW, you will see a box labeled My Madison Courses, in that box, click open the show box labeled Ongoing. A link labeled N449- Western Campus Clinical Site Ranking Information-Spring 08 will be displayed. Click on that link and it will take you to the information regarding the ranking process and the ranking form.

  • Read all the instructions carefully regarding the ranking process located on the Learn@UW web site.

  • Students must submit their completed form no later than midnight on Thursday, November 8, 2007. If you have not submitted your completed form by November 8, you will be assigned to whatever clinical sites remain open after the ranking process is completed. Your clinical site assignment will be posted on Learn@UW mid-November, an email notification will be sent as soon as assignments are posted.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Students are not permitted to find their own clinical site or preceptor.  This cannot be emphasized enough!  There are many intricacies involved in clinical placement of which students are unaware.  Students will rank their sites.  The rankings will be entered into a computer program that will generate site assignments that are fair to all students.

Computer Training

Due to upgrades in technology and the compliance to HIPPA, all students will have to attend a computer training session prior to beginning the clinical rotation.  At that training you will be granted access to the computer functions that you will utilize in clinical.  It is mandatory that you attend this training.  Date(s) will be sent to you when available.

Students will not be reimbursed for travel expenses if the placement is off the main Gundersen Lutheran campus.
